Brainspotting Therapy in West Jefferson, NC
WHAT IS BRAINSPOTTING?
Through the patient-led, focused mindfulness technique of Brainspotting, individuals can actively allow their brains to heal themselves. Moreover, this approach fosters deep, self-directed healing.
While Brainspotting draws on techniques and theories from other modalities, it stands apart by offering a unique and distinct healing process. In contrast to other therapy approaches, it provides a different experience that is highly effective.
Unlike many other modalities, this trauma work requires minimal talking. Patients are only encouraged to speak if they find it helpful, making it ideal for addressing concerns that may feel particularly ‘triggering.’ By doing so, Brainspotting effectively diminishes the power trauma holds over the present, offering significant relief.
Not only does Brainspotting support the brain’s healing from trauma and nervous system dysregulation, but it also helps those who feel ‘stuck.’ As a result, it enables individuals to achieve greater clarity, growth, and peace.
At our practice, Brainspotting is one of our preferred methods for working with clients. We have found that incorporating this technique can be especially beneficial for those who have not responded to other treatments or medications.
The brain has the power to heal from trauma so that you can live in the present where joy occurs.
It doesn't have to be this hard.
Depression, anxiety, irritability, mood swings, or general feelings of being overwhelmed can lead to both physical and emotional symptoms. As a result, these struggles impact self-confidence, relationships, and overall well-being.
- Longer appointments allow us to take the time to fully understand both your past and present.
- We will examine both the big picture and the smaller details.
- We'll be honest: some symptoms and conditions are best treated with therapy, while others may require medication.
- Because we don't file insurance, we can focus solely on your needs and goals, rather than the limitations of the diagnostic boxes insurance often places you in. That said, the diagnostic process can sometimes be helpful. If we do make a diagnosis, we will ensure you understand why and what it means for your recovery.
- At the end of every appointment, you will leave with actionable steps in your plan to help you continue growing and improving between sessions. Additionally, we regularly use handouts, guides, and supplemental resources to support your progress.
WHAT IS SUBCORTICAL PROCESSING?
Thanks for asking!
- Subcortical processing involves a ‘bottom-up’ approach to processing, focusing on the brain’s deeper structures.
- By using your eyes and the position of your gaze, you can directly access your midbrain, where regulation occurs.
- In Brainspotting, this process occurs by noticing how your body responds to certain memories or experiences, and then locating the position of your gaze where you best connect with this information. You may have noticed this happening naturally when someone asks you a question or when you ‘get stuck staring’ while thinking about something.
- Subcortical processes, which are part of the limbic cortex, are activated in response to somatic (physical) sensations that occur in the subcorte.
- Subcortical processing appears to be a faster, more efficient, better tolerated, and more complete way to heal.
- When subcortical processing occurs and nervous system regulation is restored, cortisol levels are reduced, allowing the hippocampal region to regenerate. As a result, memories can be processed, and you can stop reliving trauma in unwanted and unexpected ways.
- This process doesn’t undo the trauma you’ve experienced; instead, it allows the trauma to be stored in the memory bank where it belongs, helping you move forward with your life.
BUT WHAT DO YOU DO DURING A SESSION OF BRAINSPOTTING?
This process doesn't undo the trauma you've experienced; rather, it helps store the trauma in the memory bank where it belongs, allowing you to move forward with your life. In reality, we will share our limbic systems while the subcortical part of your brain shows the cortical part what it needs to heal. You will observe with curiosity and kindness as your brain connects your different experiences, thoughts, and sensations into a cohesive understanding of both the past and the present.
Here are the steps that we will adjust to work for you:
- First, identify an area of need, whether it’s to reduce activation or create expansion.
- Next, notice where this need is felt in your body.
- Then, find the gaze point where your brain recognizes the need in a way that is most helpful and aligned with your body’s experience.
- Next, observe the thoughts, feelings, and images your brain generates.
THIS SOUNDS KINDA FROU FROU...
How do we know it is helping?Great question!
This is likely the most common question we receive, quickly followed by, ‘How do we know we’re doing it right?
First of all, there isn’t a “right” or “wrong” way to experience Brainspotting. In fact, this modality is especially tolerable if you have experienced trauma because you will always be in control and you will be using the perfect tool for healing-your own brain.
Here’s what clients say:
- “I didn’t expect this to work, but that was truly amazing. Thank you!”.
- “I don’t think I’ve thought about that in years, and I didn’t realize my brain was still holding onto it.
- “It’s as if I’ve finally come to truly know or accept something I’ve heard and believed, but never really felt.”
- “The weirdest thing happened. I’ve struggled with this problem for a long time, but since we started Brainspotting, I realized it doesn’t bother me anymore—at all.”
I'M INTRIGUED BUT I HAVE QUESTIONS
No problem! I've got answers!
Q: How long does it take?
A: This really depends on what you’re working on. I recommend that clients schedule sessions weekly or biweekly. Some may only need a few sessions, while others may stay in treatment for several months.
Q: Will we spend our entire time Brainspotting?
A: This depends on your needs and goals. We will start and end every session with a check-in and adjust the approach as needed to meet your goals.
Q: Do I have to do Brainspotting if I work with you?
A: No, this is just one of the services I offer.
Q: Can I see my regular therapist and only see you for Brainspotting?
A: Yes, you will sign a release of information, allowing us to communicate.
Q: Do I have to tell you about my trauma to do Brainspotting?
A: No, how much you share is entirely up to you and based on what you need. Verbal processing is not necessary for Brainspotting to be effective.
Q: Can we start Brainspotting right away?
A: Yes, I offer a longer intake appointment so we can get started during your first session, if you’re ready to begin.
Q: I tried EMDR and didn’t like it or find it helpful. Can I still do Brainspotting?
A: Yes! While both modalities use the eyes and are effective for trauma, there are several key differences that make Brainspotting particularly helpful for clients who didn’t benefit from EMDR.
Q: What can Brainspotting be used for?
A: Brainspotting is used to address a variety of conditions, as well as to support adults seeking growth and expansion. It can reduce symptoms of trauma, depression, anxiety, anger, irritability, OCD, and addiction.
Q: What do I need to do to prepare?
A: Come with a curious mind, and be sure to have a safe, comfortable, and private space for your appointment.
Q: What will I need to do after my session?
A: Brainspotting is intense work, and your brain will continue processing after your session. Therefore, please be sure to prioritize your self-care practices afterward.
Q: Can I include music in my sessions?
A: Yes, many clients find that bilateral sounds or music helps them process. Please prepare at least 40 minutes of uninterrupted music of your choice.
Q: Is there research that supports Brainspotting?
A: Yes, this modality has been used successfully for over 20 years. You can explore available research here: https://brainspotting.com/about-bsp/research-and-case-studies/.
